πŸ•°οΈ History & background

Mirror Lake supplied downtown St. Petersburg's drinking water starting in 1899, back when the city's population was only around 1,500. The surrounding blocks grew into a genuine civic center over the following decades: the Beaux Arts-style Carnegie Library opened in 1915, and in 1924 a group of six players founded the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club right on the lakefront β€” the first dedicated shuffleboard club in the world, which grew to 5,000 members by 1944 and still standardized the sport's official court dimensions and rules used today. The lake's surrounding neighborhood was named a Local Historic District as recently as December 2024, protecting the library, the shuffleboard courts, and the lawn bowling club (Florida's oldest) that still ring the water.
