Gandy Beach
A natural, mangrove-lined stretch along a causeway with a surprisingly big role in Tampa Bay history.
π°οΈ History & background
Gandy Beach sits along the causeway leading to the Gandy Bridge, the very first bridge to span Tampa Bay. Built by Philadelphia developer George "Dad" Gandy and opened on November 20, 1924, the original bridge cut the trip between St. Petersburg and Tampa from a full day's journey down to under an hour, and drew a crowd of more than 30,000 to its opening ceremony β the largest celebration in the city's history at the time. Historians credit the bridge with turning two separate cities into the single "Tampa Bay" region known today.
π What's there now
Shallow, calm water makes this great for small dogs still learning to swim. It's not fenced or officially a dog beach, so keep dogs leashed and be mindful of the mangroves β a mixed bag depending who you ask, but a local favorite for a low-key splash.
πΊοΈ Nearby
Worth a stop: no single standout spot right at the causeway β most people treat this as a quick stop on the way between St. Pete and Tampa rather than a destination in itself.
